movement, bitter tears & the screen

    Saturday 24th January 2026 - 2 pm to 5 pm, SPACE Studios Hackney (131 Mare St, London, E8 3RH)

Facilitated by theatre-artist & screen-actor Pia Laborde-Noguez and assisted by theatre-artist & researcher Nina Kunzendorf, the workshop will look closely at Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant as a point of departure for thinking about how bodies become images.
Perspectives on the body in film will be introduced as tools for exploring it as a live composition: opening conversations around gesture, rhythm, and spatial arrangement, as well as the ways emotional intensity can move through and between performers, fill the frame, and appear on screen.
Using props and costumes drawn from Fassbinder’s cinematic world, participants will experiment with how feeling materialises through movement, and how it reaches through the camera to affect an audience. The emphasis throughout is on attentiveness and experimentation, rather than on performance as display.
The workshop welcomes performers, filmmakers, and visual artists interested in the relationship between performance and image.
